Job Description
Virginia Tech invites applicants for multiple tenured or
tenure-track faculty positions at any rank (assistant professor,
associate professor and professor) in Quantum Systems. The
successful candidates will have expertise in technologies
associated with quantum sensors and devices for future real-world
solutions in application areas such as positioning, navigation and
timing, magnetometry, electrometry, mass spectrometry, chemical
sensing, optomechanics, and gravitometry. The positions will be
anchored at the Virginia Tech National Security Institute (in
either Arlington or Blacksburg), and the candidates will hold
tenure-line appointments in an academic department in either the
College of Engineering or the College of Science depending upon
background and personal preference.
Quantum science and engineering is one of four major research
frontiers at Virginia Tech

locations in Arlington and Blacksburg, Virginia, faculty will be in
close proximity to federal agencies, national laboratories, and
federally-funded research and development centers.
The Virginia Tech National Security Institute (VTNSI) is a
university thematic research institute

Security. Given the appointment at the VTNSI, successful candidates
must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a
U.S. Government security clearance.
Successful candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent in a relevant field by
date of hire, and practical government or industry experience is
preferred. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a
vigorous and well-funded research program; continue development of
scholarly activities and professional capabilities; and actively
participate in institute, department, college, and university
governance.

Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. or equivalent in engineering, physics or a closely related
field by date of hire
- U.S. Citizen
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S Government security
clearance
- Recognized as a contributor by peers in their field of study
- Possess a high degree of scholarship in peer-reviewed journals or
institutional reports
- Evidence of mentoring colleagues and/or students
- Strong service contributions
- Evidence of proposal development and project management of
sponsored programs

$125,000 - 200,000 depending upon rank and location

Additional Information
The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal
conviction check and must be a U.S. Citizen. There are multiple
openings and applications will be reviewed continuously until the
positions are filled. It is expected that initial interviews will
