AIR is currently seeking a Communications Specialist to join our Workforce Program Area (WPA) within our Human Services Division. This role is intended to aid us with disseminating critical external communication essential to advancing outcomes in Workforce research, evaluation, and technical assistance (TA) and in expanding eminence building regarding the work we do holistically under the program area.

This is a remote position; however, this role may ultimately have the option to work from one of our offices located in the DC area, Chicago (IL), Waltham (MA), Oakland (CA), Austin (TX), Chapel Hill (NC), and Seattle (WA) metro areas, or continue to work remotely.

This role will lead AIR's outreach support team for the PROMISE Center, a comprehensive initiative focused on improving workforce development and training at scale for all individuals and funded by AIR's Equity Initiative. The Communications Specialist will also serve as a task lead for the WPA working with our Strategic Communications and Eminence Building Functional Leads, WPA Leadership, and WPA Practice Hub Leaders.

The Communications Specialist will coordinate with AIR's Human Services Division Communications roles, Corporate Communications, and Publications shared-services teams to support the development of a PROMISE Center communications strategy, which may include channel development and enhancements to existing channels. The PROMISE Center is establishing a website and is expecting to have a comprehensive engagement strategy with funders, practitioners, policymakers, and researchers. Tasks will include organizing a listening tour, planning online forums and events, and coordinating a strategic set of deliverables that showcase the Center's research strands and interconnections between them. The Communications Specialist will oversee a small team of integrated communications specialists and will report directly to the Vice President(s) of WPA for all work related to the PROMISE Center. The role will work with similar stakeholders in the role of WPA strategic communications and will have a dotted line reporting structure to the WPA Functional Strategic Communications and Eminence Building Leads for that WPA communications work.

This role requires playing an active role in maintaining and building relationships with the workforce system as well as employers and other stakeholders such as employers and non-profits, thinking creatively to identify new approaches to solving problems for these audiences. A successful candidate will be aware of current events and information on workforce, be familiar with communicating to diverse audiences, and will also enjoy the opportunity to innovate and contribute ideas for more effective communications and engagement tactics.

The responsibilities for the position include:

* Gather and provide strategic support to the PROMISE Center to develop a strong communications strategy and plan, manage communications projects for the PROMISE Center, WPA and other client projects with integrated communications team
* Lead the production and ongoing enhancement of WPA external communications content including web and social media presence, visual communications including audio, video, modern media communication assets, newsletters and others as identified collaboratively with WPA leadership
* Engage and connect stakeholders through social media, graphics, and creative campaigns highlighting the PROMISE Center, WPA Eminence Building initiatives, and project work respectively
* Compile and analyze metrics from external communications campaigns; identify and propose effective metrics on outreach/communication efforts and partner with WPA to test new approaches for improved engagement


Education, Knowledge, and Experience:

* Bachelor's degree and 6+ years of experience or master's degree and 4+ years of experience in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or relevant field is preferred
* Experience supporting external clients and managing small teams and working in a shared services model
* Highly familiar with tools for building and analyzing social media campaign products (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and other WPA identified channels) and metrics to generate analytics reports to inform impact and data-driven continuous improvement communications strategies
* Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere Pro, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat)
* Experience in online presence design including user-experience design and web content production
* Experience working on workforce communications initiatives


* Skilled in project management, including developing and adapting implementation plans and timelines for multiple projects across several small teams
* Skilled in communicating with clients, preferably federal agency, regarding identifying client requests and expectations, allocating resources, setting calendars for simultaneous projects
* Excellent time management skills and ability to handle multiple projects involving numerous changes simultaneously
* Excellent verbal and written communication, including skills in copywriting-both technical and creative-and editing with attention to grammar, style guides, formatting, audiences, and tone

Candidates selected for an interview, will be asked to provide communications samples (i.e., Social Media Campaign, Newsletter, Project Brief, Website, etc.)


AIR requires all new hires to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or receive a legally required exemption from AIR, as a condition of employment.
