Junior Biological Scientist



Merrick is seeking a Biological Scientist with a background in life sciences, biosafety & biosecurity, laboratory operations, global health security, and associated project management tasks.  This Biological Scientist will administer project management, provide technical reviews of products and programs, and support client projects with significant science components in the broader Washington, DC area. The individual will join our growing Merrick team, and will be based full-time at our client location in Lorton, VA – approximately 17 miles south of our Arlington, VA office.  



  • Client projects for this position require US Citizenship.
  • Active US DOD Secret clearance, or the ability and willingness to obtain Secret clearance, is required. 

Job Description

As a Biological Scientist, the successful candidate will:

  • Support multi-disciplinary life sciences projects to be executed primarily from client site in Lorton, VA office
  • Actively support significant U.S. government projects and clients requiring a high degree of life sciences technical, logistics, and management acumen
  • Work with other subdisciplines within the project team to support strategic planning and execution of multi-discipline efforts.
  • Provide technical support to a large team of scientists, project managers, acquisition experts, and/or engineers on projects in a variety of international geographic locations.
  • Communicate and coordinate with project stakeholders and supervisors as required for successful project execution.
  • Maintain and develop positive client relationships.
  • Support technical review of training programs, laboratory floorplans, workflows, procurement lists, and/or scientific programming documents to assess compliance with international biosafety, biosecurity, and/or biosurveillance standards.
  • Be available to travel, including internationally, for project work, site inspections, gap assessments, and training programs.
  • Have or be able to obtain security clearance for work with the U.S. Federal Government.

General Management skills and responsibilities may include:

  • Support to scientific and technical staff
  • Flexibility and experience to support a variety of technical and administrative inquiries and issues daily.
  • High degree of professionalism, integrity, and business ethics required.

Required Experience and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated scientific technical experience to develop, evaluate, and review multi-disciplinary life sciences/biosafety/biosecurity/logistics/ health security projects.
  • Required experience: Zero (0) - three (3) years. 
  • Ability to support multi-disciplinary life sciences/biosafety/biosecurity/logistics/ health security projects.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Utilize strong interpersonal skills to interface successfully with clients and teammates.
  • Ability to support highly technical projects (biological containment or other life sciences facilities) and operational programs (biosafety and biosecurity management systems and programs).
  • Experience in a Technical and/or Scientific support capacity.
  • BS/BA degree or equivalent in scientific discipline from an A.B.E.T. accredited University or Higher Education Institution.
  • Good working knowledge of the life sciences, biosafety, and biosecurity fields, emerging technologies, government/academic/industrial programs preferred.
  • Past performance working in or for U.S. federal agencies (i.e., DoD, DHS, HHS) strongly preferred.
  • Local candidates preferred, or willingness to relocate/commute to Northern Virginia/ Relocation will be considered.
  • Domestic and international travel required – 25% to 50%.
  • Client projects for this position require United States Citizenship.

  • The job requires the ability to sit for extended periods at a computer workstation.
  • The job requires the ability to travel within and outside of the U.S.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as but not limited to computers, copiers, printers, scanners, and plotters.
