Established in 1946, with headquarters in Crystal City, Virginia, AIR is an independent, nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization that conducts behavioral and social science research on important social issues and delivers technical assistance and capacity building services domestically and internationally in health, social development, education, and workforce to a growing roster of clients and partners. We are seeking Research Assistants to join AIR's Workforce program area, which includes projects in the areas of postsecondary education, career and technical education, workforce development, and other related domains (adult learning, individuals with disabilities, youth employment, apprenticeships, etc.). Research Assistants will work on multiple research projects, contributing both content and technical knowledge to project teams and activities. This position can be located out of any of the following AIR locations once offices are reopened: Crystal City, VA, Rockville, MD, Austin, TX, Chicago, IL, Chapel Hill, NC or Waltham, MA.


  • Conduct literature reviews to support projects and proposals
  • Assist staff in the review, identification and development of scholarly information describing research findings
  • Participate in the collection, analysis, and review of research and evaluation data
  • Develop spreadsheets and data bases to support project activities
  • Analyze quantitative and qualitative research data and contribute to the reporting and interpretation of findings
  • Support planning and implementation of national and/or project meetings and events
  • Provide managerial support on projects
  • Support new business and proposal development efforts by engaging in such tasks as researching funding opportunities, collecting and organizing required information, writing proposal sections, etc.


  • Commitment to AIR's mission of generating and using rigorous evidence that contributes to a better, more equitable world
  • Bachelor's degree in such fields as economics, psychology, sociology, statistics, computer science, public policy, education, or other social science related fields
  • Experience with and/or knowledge of data collection and analysis methodologies and techniques, such as survey design, analysis of program administrative data, and conduct of structured interviews, observations, and focus groups
  • Experience with or inclination to learn and use statistical software programs such as R, SPSS, or Stata to analyze data - a plus (not required)
  • Excellent organization, time management, and oral and written communication skills
  • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy during data collection, analysis, and writing
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite or the equivalent (word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software)
  • Comfortable working independently and as a member of a team
