Raptor Intern Expected Dates May 24, 2021 to October 24, 2021 Site Acadia National Park Position ID PO-00729616 Primary duties include: Working in the Interpretive Division, every day provides an opportunity to work in a fast paced public contact environment with the goal of assisting and educating visitors. 50-60% assisting with informal interpretation at peregrine falcon and hawk watch sites. Applicant will assist with sta?ng the main visitor center information desk. Other duties may include assist rangers on programs (i.e., bird programs); present basic interpretive programs; conduct roves and other forms of informal interpretation at site and field locations. Skills and knowledge that you will gain on the job include avian identification ( esp migrating hawks), their life histories, and their numbers and distribution in Acadia; developing and enhancing public speaking, interpretive knowledge and visitor service skills. Previous experience at hawk watch sites or with raptors is helpful. Work is primarily in the field with long periods of standing and walking on uneven terrain in all types of weather including intense heat in the summer and cold wind in the fall. Only those who are fit will have an enjoyable experience. A positive attitude, a willingness to learn, a strong desire to interact with the public on a daily basis, and the ability to work independently in the field are required. + Location Description Acadia National Park protects more than 47,000 acres of stunning scenery, nationally-significant culturalresources and a wide variety of natural habitats along the rocky, mid-coast of Maine where the mountainsmeet the sea. Temperatures generally range from 80 degrees in the summer to 40s in the fall, with the oceanin?uencing the parks character and weather. With over three million visits per year, the park and localcommunities are extremely busy in the summer. + Training Provided NPS informal interpretive techniques and scientific methods used in studying and reporting avian data. Avian identification,their life histories, and their numbers and distribution in Acadia. Training in the field by experienced ornithology rangers. + Educational/Recreational Opportunities The town of Bar Harbor features numerous community events, from parades to public lectures at the library.The College of the Atlantic offers many educational opportunities for the public. Hiking, biking, canoeing and kayaking are all nearby. + Handicap Accessible? Yes Quarters are in a mixed-gender shared house, with common living, cooking, dining, and bathroom areas.Residents may have their own bedroom, but in some cases may need to share with a same-gender roommate. Residentsprovide their own bedding. Limited kitchenware is available to borrow, but specialized items and appliancesshould be brought if needed. Indoor/Outdoor Outdoor US Citizenship Required
