Rares Center for Behavior & the Environment (BE.Center) was launched in 2017 to bring the best insights from behavioral science and design to tackle some of the worlds most challenging environmental issues. Through partnership with leading academic and research institutions, we are translating the science of human behavior into practical solutions for conservationists worldwide. The BE.Centers strategy focuses on three primary activities to achieve this vision, which include building:

  • Demand for applying behavioral insights to conservation
  • Evidence that behavioral interventions are effective
  • Ability of current and future conservation practitioners to apply behavioral insights to their work
  • Behavior-Centered Design (BCD) is an approach that blends design thinking and behavioral science to develop solutions to environmental problems. The BE.Center is searching for a Behavior-Centered Design Intern who will support our team to develop and test tools that get posted on our virtual learning platform and used in our trainings. These tools help practitioners work through different steps of developing a behavior change solution. A list of completed tools can be found here.

    Position Overview

    Projects may include helping to develop new tools on the following topics:

    • Applying a diversity, equity, inclusion, and/or justice lens to steps in Behavior-Centered Design
    • Prototyping and testing behavioral solutions
    • Developing a behavior change assessment plan
    • Using a feasibility and impact matrix to select behavior change solution ideas
    • Another idea that you propose!

    Other projects could include evaluating existing tools to make them more accessible and useful for all people and being a thought partner on opportunities related to Behavior-Centered Design. If youre interested in helping environmental practitioners to apply insights from behavioral and social science to real-world problems, then this role is for you!

    Recommended skills and qualifications:

    • Well organized, self-motivated, and able to manage deadlines
    • Creativity and willingness to take risks
    • Comfort with writing and editing for a general audience
    • Superb attention to detail
    • Familiarity with user experience design, design thinking, or human-centered design
    • Familiarity with behavior change or behavioral science
    • Interest in conservation, climate change, sustainability, and/or environmental justice through coursework, work experience or personal activities
    • Familiarity with Adobe software a plus, but not needed
    • Native or near-native written and spoken English language skills required
