This recruitment will be used to fill vacant positions during the season. It may close at any time.The Oregon Military Department is recruiting for Wildland Fire Suppression Specialists for multiple positions at various locations. These are seasonal full-time positions located in Powell Butte, Warrenton, and Hermiston, Oregon.These positions are represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees' (AFSCME) union.You are NOT required to be a member of the Oregon National Guard to apply for this position.NOTE: This recruitment announcement will be used to establish a list of qualified candidates to fill the current vacancy and may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.If you are a current State of Oregon employee, you must apply through your employee Workday profile.What you will be doing:The Wildland Fire Suppression Specialists (WFSS) perform a wide variety of manual tasks in the areas of wildland fire prevention/mitigation, and fire suppression. These positions serve as a member or engineer operator for an engine or on a hand crew. The WFSS's are responsible for engine/crew readiness of an assigned crew. These positions coordinate and/or performs physical labor necessary to suppress and extinguish wildfire. Duties include detection, pre-suppression, prevention, and suppression. Also completes routine building and ground maintenance.Working Conditions:Employee is expected to work in a safe and efficient manner, including reporting to work for scheduled shift with all personal protective equipment (PPE). Required to drive wildland fire engines obeying all traffic laws and drives on steep narrow forest roads. Required to work various shifts including holidays, nights, weekends, and long hours on short notice. Assignments to emergency incidents may require employee to be away from duty station for up to 21 days. Occasionally required to work under adverse conditions such as noise, smoke, heat, rough terrain, dust, inclement weather and exposure to poison oak, bees and poisonous snakes. Requires occasional exposure to heavy equipment operations, aircraft, hazards of burning and/or falling material, and chemical and biological pesticides.Work ExperienceThe work experience section of your application must include a clear description of your experience in order to determine if you meet the required skills (minimum and special qualifications) and at what level you meet the requested skills. Supplemental materials such as cover letters and/or a resume will NOT be used to determine candidate's qualifications.Work experience is based on a 40-hour work week. (Example: 20 hours a week for one year would equal six-months of work experience.)What you need to qualify:Two (2) years of Wildland firefighting experience (One 3-6 month season counts as 1 year of experience);-AND-Must be 18 years of age by the time of hire.ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:Possess and maintain a valid driver license;NOTE: If applying from out of state, please be prepared to provide a 3-year driving abstract from your local Department of Motor Vehicles.Successful applicants must take and pass the physical fitness Work Capacity Test at the arduous level as a condition of hire.
