New Hampshire Conservation Corps Expected Dates May 11, 2021 to October 28, 2021 Site SCA NH Corps Position ID PO-00731787 The SCAs NH Conservation Corps: Created in 1994 by the SCA, New Hampshire Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, and AmeriCorps to meet the environmental conservation, natural resource protection, community stewardship, historic preservation, and workforce development needs of the public lands of New Hampshire. For 27 years, our crews have completed high priority service projects with New Hampshire State Parks, White Mountain National Forest, towns, local and national nonprofits, and land trusts. The mission of SCA New Hampshire Conservation Corps (NHCC) is to serve the communities and lands of New Hampshire while building corps members leadership and technical skills in the conservation ?eld. In the tradition of the Civilian Conservation Corps, NHCC members perform direct hands-on service while developing their ethic of service and citizenship. NHCC has provided over one million hours of service to New Hampshire. Each year 20 members complete 27 high-priority conservation projects throughout the state; from the Maine border to Vermont, and the Canadian border to the seacoast. Training Season: This season runs from May through mid-June. You will start your initial training at Spruce Pond Camp in Bear Brook State Park. Throughout the training season you will learn from experienced staff and instructors, covering topics such as: + SCA, AmeriCorps, and NH State Park Policies and Protocols + T eamwork, Leadership, Risk Management, and Con?ict Resolution Skills Training + Camp Skills + Carpentry Skills + Comprehensive Trail Construction & Maintenance Skills including Native Timber & Stonework + Defensive Driver Training + Diversity and Inclusion Training + Rigging and grip-hoist activities Conservation Season: This year crews will be completing exciting projects including trail restoration and maintenance on Mt. Monadnock (the most hiked mountain in North America) trail improvement on the summit of Mt. Washington, invasive species removal on the seacoast, and assisting in the restoration of the historic cabin atop Mt. Cabot in White Mountain National Forest. The 2021 NHCC Service Projects Include: + Bridge Construction + Rock Work (staircases and stepping stones) + Historic Preservation + Erecting Camping Shelters and Kiosks + New Trail Construction + Invasive Species Management + And More! Location Description: This position is based out of Spruce Pond Camp in Bear Brook State Park. This historic camp, which was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, has been home to NHCC since 1995. At over 10,000 acres, Bear Brook State Park (BBSP) is the largest developed state park in New Hampshire. Spruce Pond Camps rustic cabins provide a great base of operations, and BBSP has plenty to explore, including miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, ponds and beaches, and great wildlife habitat where you can find moose, bear, beavers, and porcupines. Professional Development Opportunities: + During this position, you will have the opportunity to learn many skills, volunteer with environmental organizations and like-minded folks across NH, and learn from one another. + Members will learn leadership and teamwork skills while co-leading their hitch teams or being active participants during field projects throughout conservation season. + Program partners work in a variety of fields. These career fields include, but are not limited to education, youth development, land management/stewardship, land conservation, outdoor recreation, and forestry. Serving alongside and learning from these professionals is an invaluable experience that will help you jump-start your career. Compensation: $90 - Weekly Stipend $5,500 - Housing and Food $3,097.50 - AmeriCorps Education Award Loan Forbearance for Qualifying Federal Loans Uniforms Training: + $150 - Leave No Trace Outdoor Ethics Training + $400 - Rigging and Griphoist use for trail work + $500 - Comprehensive Trail Construction Skills including Native Timber, Stonework, and New Trail Design + Backcountry Living Skills + Crew Management and Leadership + Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Training + Defensive Driver Training + Teamwork, Leadership, and Risk Management + Con?ict Resolution Skills Training $11,897.5 - Total Compensation Hours: Corps members serve approximately 40-45 hours a week for a period of 6 months. Members must complete a minimum of 900 hours during the term of service (roughly 25 weeks of service). Essential Functions and Qualifications: + Must have an ability to serve independently and as part of a team + Must be able and willing to live and serve in diverse situations and outdoor environments + Must be willing to try new things and learn new skills + Must be able to lift 50 lbs and hike 5 miles daily + Must be willing to learn how to use hand tools and power tools to accomplish service activities + Must have good communication skills + Must have a high school diploma/GED but some college is preferred + Must be willing to serve some nights and weekends + Must be willing to camp outside for 10 days at a time Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Previous camping and backpacking experience is helpful but not required. Strong organizational, verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills are required. Working and living in a community setting for a common goal is critical, as is being able to work independently .
