Job Description:
Position InformationPlease read this entire announcement before
submitting your application. This announcement is specific to the
Therapeutic Recreation Camp Staff. If you are interested in other
camp program areas, you must apply for that position as
well.Opportunities for temporary summer employment with the
Arlington County Department of Parks & Recreation include work as
Camp Directors, Assistant Directors, and support staff (counselors)
in camp programs throughout the County. Therapeutic Recreation Camp
Counselors are needed to providing camp programs and inclusion
support for individuals with disabilities ages 3-21. Several
positions are available and hours vary.Staff must commit from June
21 - August 13 (core camp dates). Additional weeks from August 16 -
August 27 may also be available. Training and planning begin in mid
to late May through June, which includes a combination of
independent and self-paced online courses with virtual and
in-person trainings during weekday evenings and a few Saturdays.
All camp staff will be trained to follow current guidance (county
specific protocols) related to Covid19 safety and health
standards.We are currently hiring for the following
positions:Inclusion Support - Support campers with disabilities,
ages 3-21, in general recreation camps. Work with camp staff to
create a positive and inclusive environment for all campers.
Support participants in skill development, expected behaviors,
personal care, and fostering independent and group participation.
Inclusion support staff provide 1:1 or lowered ratio support at
various general recreation camps. Access to reliable transportation
required as staff must be able to get to different sites around the
County independently. Shifts vary and are dependent on camps and
assignment needs. (Position Available: SRAII). Adapted Camps
(elementary, teen and young adult ages) - Assist campers with
disabilities, ages 6-21, in adapted camp settings. Be part of
creating a positive camp environment and support campers in skill
development, expected behaviors, personal care, and fostering
independent and group participation. (Positions Available: SAI/II,
SRAII, RAIII, RAIV). Substitute Support -This position is perfect
for an applicant who is looking for intermittent hours each week.
Responsibilities may include: providing inclusion support for
participants in evening and weekend general recreation classes and
fill in as needed as inclusion support in adapted or general
recreation camps. Flexibility is required. Ability to work on a as
needed basis is preferred. (Positions Available: RAIII & RAIV).
Applications are being accepted for the following positions:STUDENT
ASSISTANT I/II (SAI/II) - $9.50-$11.00/HourResponsible for
assisting all leaders in the summer camp or program activities and
operations. Applicants must be at least 16 years old to be hired
for licensed preschool camp, all other camps require the applicant
be at least 15 years old. Minimum requirements: Applications for
Student Assistant positions will only be considered from
individuals who have previously volunteered in one or more of our
summer camps. These individuals are either non-high school
graduates (SA I) or high school graduates enrolled in post-high
school level education programs who have not accumulated at least 3
months of relevant experience (SA II).SUMMER RECREATION ASSISTANT
II - $14.25/Hour Responsible for assisting in the planning,
leading, and conducting of recreation activities for a camp,
behavior management of participants, and assisting in the
evaluations of the activities and the participants.Minimum
requirements: Graduation from high school/GED, plus six months
experience in administering recreational programs or facility
monitoring. Certification in CPR and First Aid is required for all
applicants hired at this level.RECREATION ASSISTANT III -
$16.07/HourResponsible for planning, leading, and conducting
recreation activities for a summer camp. Responsible for completing
participant and program evaluations. Performs related supervisory
and administrative duties.Minimum requirements: Graduation from
high school/GED, plus one-year experience (equivalent of 4 summers)
in administering recreation programs. Certification in CPR and
First Aid is required for all applicants hired at this
level.RECREATION ASSISTANT IV - $19.35/HourResponsible for
directing a summer camp with responsibility for all rooms in that
program. Performs supervisory and administrative duties.Minimum
requirements: College degree in leisure or recreational studies,
special education or a related field, plus one-year experience
(equivalent of 4 summers) in administrating recreation programs.
Certification in CPR and First Aid is required for all applicants
hired at this level. If you are hired as a Preschool Camp Director,
you must be 21 years old at time of employment.Selection

Agree to a criminal background check. * Provide negative TB results
or submit to a TB screening. * Attend all required trainings. *
Some positions require a valid motorized vehicle operator's license
and driving history record check. * Some positions require First
Aid/CPR certification. * Be open to provide personal care as needed
to campers (training provided). * Candidates that are selected for
the Inclusion Support program will be required to complete
additional licensing paperwork.* Candidates may be asked to provide
two letters of reference from related work/school experience prior
to an offer of employment. Letters of reference may be attached to
this application. However, inclusion of letters of reference do not
imply a candidate has been selected for the position.Additional
InformationWork Hours: These positions vary in days and hours of
work, from a few hours per week to a full forty (40) hours per week

camp positions will remain open until filled. We hope to have all

are permanent, full-time appointments unless otherwise stated in
the announcement. The following benefits are available:Paid Leave :
Vacation leave is earned at the rate of four hours biweekly. Leave
accrual increases every three years until eight hours of leave are
earned biweekly for twelve or more years of service. Sick leave is
earned at the rate of four hours biweekly. There are eleven paid
holidays each year.Health and Dental Insurance : Three group health
insurance plans are offered - a network open access plan, a
point-of-service plan, and a health maintenance organization. A
group dental insurance plan is also offered. The County pays a
significant portion of the premium for these plans for employees
and their dependents. A discount vision plan is provided for eye
care needs.Life Insurance : A group term policy of basic life
insurance is provided at no cost to employees. The benefit is one
times annual salary. Additional life insurance is available with
rates based on the employee's age and smoker/non-smoker
status.Retirement : The County offers three vehicles to help you
prepare for retirement: a defined benefit plan, a defined
contribution plan (401(a)), and a deferred compensation plan (457).
The defined benefit plan provides a monthly retirement benefit
based on your final average salary and years of service with the
County. You contribute a portion of your salary on a pre-tax basis
to this plan. General employees contribute 4% of pay; uniformed
public safety employees contribute 7.5% of pay. Employees become
vested in the plan at five years of service. The County also
contributes to this plan. For general employees, the County also
contributes 4.2% of pay to a defined contribution plan (401(a)) .
The County also matches your 457 contribution, up to $20 per pay
period, in this plan. The 457 deferred compensation plan allows you
to set aside money on either a pre-tax (457b) or post-tax (457
Roth) basis up to the IRS annual limit. New employees are
automatically enrolled with a pre-tax contribution equal to 2% of
your base pay.Other Benefits: The County also offers health,
dependent care, and parking flexible spending accounts; long-term
care insurance; tuition assistance; transit and walk/bike to work
subsidies; a college savings plan; wellness programs; training
opportunities; and a variety of other employee benefits.Permanent,
Part-Time Appointments:Part time employees who work ten or more
hours per week receive paid leave and benefits in proportion to the
number of hours worked per week.Limited Term Appointments:Benefits
are the same as permanent appointments except that the employees do
not achieve permanent status.Temporary Regular
Appointments:Temporary regular employees who work 30 hours or more
per week are eligible for health, dental, and basic life insurance
as described above. They are also eligible for vacation, sick
leave, and paid holidays. Temporary Seasonal and Occasional
Appointments: Temporary employees who work on a seasonal basis or
variable hours receive sick leave, but do not normally receive
other paid leave or benefits. Exceptions are noted in individual

throughout the month of June as well as all-day training on a
