Every day, through careful review, permitting and inspection of site and building construction, our staff protect the health, safety, welfare, and environment for those who live in, work in, and visit Fairfax County. Our department also serves as the gateway to much of the county's economic development, reviewing over 30,000 building and site plan submissions, issuing nearly 70,000 building permits, and conducting over 220,000 building and site inspections each year. Under the supervision of a Permit Services supervisor, provides excellent customer service to applicants, developers, engineers, contractors, and citizens regarding application and plan review status of building and site-related plans and permits. Explaines complex construction regulations to developers, contractors, design professionals, homeowners, constituents, and other Fairfax County agencies. Ensures compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and standards related to various types of construction within Fairfax County. Ensures plans and permit applications meet minimum submission requirements and ensure that issued permits meet the same standards. Assists customers in person at public counters, by email, by virtual meetings and by telephone. Using available resources, responds to customer inquiries and project status requests in a timely manner. Explains Fairfax County related codes, policies, and procedures. Processes permit applications to ensure compliance and acceptance with all applicable codes and policies. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; plus, three years of engineering technical support work. VDHCD (Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development) Permit Technician required

UNDERFILL REQUIREMENTS:
This vacancy may be underfilled at the level of Engineering Technician I (S16, $46,384.00 - $77,305.49). The employment standards for the Engineering Technician I are:

• Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; and one year of engineering technical support work experience or one year of post-secondary vocational trade school or completion of one year of an applied science associate's degree.

Underfill candidates must be able to meet the minimum qualifications of the Full Capacity position within one year of the job announcement's closing date of 5/23/25. Upon completion of an underfill agreement the employee will be elevated to the level of Engineering Technician II.
  
  PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  
  • Experience assisting customers with technical questions in a fast-paced environment, both in person and on the telephone.
  • General knowledge of land development processes and permitting applications.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction documents.
  • Experience with and general knowledge of the construction field for residential or commercial projects.
  • Familiar with the Virginia Construction Code, the ICC Family of Codes, the local building code and/or other Fairfax County ordinances.
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
    Ability to use keyboard driven equipment; orally/verbally communicate with clients; and sit for extended periods of time.
