Job Description:
The general purpose of resident services is to offer programs
that will improve the quality of life at AHC properties and
strengthen the neighborhoods where AHC properties are located.
Resident Services offers programs for all age groups, but focuses
primarily on children and teens. After-school and summer programs
for youth comprise the largest part of resident services
programming. Workshops, classes and field trips are offered during
the year for adults and senior citizens.The Resident Services
Manager is responsible for planning and delivering impactful,
culturally inclusive, and resident-informed programming in
multi-family communities in Arlington, Virginia. His/her
responsibilities include providing afterschool and teen tutoring
programming, connecting residents with needed and available
community resources, and coordinating and implementing social
activities and health and educational programs. - -Responsibilities
include:
- Directing and Managing Programs: -Plan and lead educational and
recreational activities for children and youth, including
after-school activities and summer camp for elementary school
students and a teen program that involves tutoring, workshops, and
field trips for middle and high school students. Programs for
elementary school students are designed to foster students'
academic success, with a special emphasis on teaching basic skills
like reading and organization, and to help them develop essential
life skills. -Programs for middle and high school students are
designed to foster students' academic success with emphasis on
"life after high school", develop essential life skills, and
provide workshops that lead to self-exploration and development of
self-identity. Programs for adults include, parent workshops,
financial literacy, ESL, adult-led community development projects
etc. In addition to regular programming, he/she will provide
community building events like backpack giveaways, Toys for Tots,
Holiday dinners, etc.
- Recruiting Participants for Programs: -Communicate with current
program participants, parents and other residents and advertise
programs through the production of a monthly calendar of events,
other fliers and announcements and the writing of articles for
community newsletters to recruit participants for programs (in
English and Spanish).
- Building and Maintaining Partnerships: -Build relationships
with partners such as public libraries, Arlington County Programs,
other local non-profits, and neighborhood schools in order to
better serve residents. -Staff works with neighborhood schools to
gain a better understanding of the needs of the children and youth
in AHC programs. In some cases, hold regular office hours at the
neighborhood school to facilitate good communication among school
personnel, families and AHC staff. In all cases, work with teachers
to get input about how to best support the academic and social
development of each child involved in after school or tutoring
programs.
- Coordinating New Programs and Other Initiatives: -Work with
volunteer groups, property management staff, county staff and staff
of other community-based non-profits to coordinate additional
on-site programs.
- Coordinating and Leveraging Volunteers: -Coordinate with and
supervise volunteers to work as tutors/mentors and computer
teachers and to help meet other community needs. Support volunteers
by providing an orientation, curricula, when appropriate, and other
necessary program materials.
- Supervising staff: -Provide supervision and support for
Resident Services Coordinator and undergraduate/graduate intern(s).

- Managing Data and Meeting Requirements of Grants: -Use systems
to collect statistics on how the center is being used and by whom
as well as performance outcome measures. Compile and enter relevant
data into monthly reports, database and help produce reports to
fulfill requirements of grants and to assist in obtaining more
funding in order to continue and expand community activities.
Assist with the development of ideas for new grant projects.
- Providing Information and Referrals to Residents: -Use
resources available to gather information to help residents address
their social service and educational needs through programs and
agencies available in the larger community. Assist residents in
completing forms and applications and help them make linkages to
appropriate agencies. -
- Maintaining Community Spaces and Equipment: -Coordinate use of
all community rooms between AHC programs and community partner
programs. -Ensure that groups using the community room and computer
center clean up after each activity and take care of the equipment
in each room. Update the bulletin boards and community calendar at
each site. Maintain computer equipment by coordinating technical
support for adjustments and repairs, as necessary, and upgrades, as
possible.Minimum requirements:
- Bachelor's degree plus at least 3 years of work experience
(Education and Social Work degrees preferred)
- Strong interpersonal, communication -and organizational
skills
- Strong motivation and the ability to work independently but
also as a team with many different partners. -
- Experience working with youth and the desire to work with youth
and young adults
- Ability to interact with a diverse population of clients both
in terms of age, economic status and cultural background
- Computer skills in Microsoft Office-excel, word, outlook
(PowerPoint -and -Publisher preferred)
