POSITION SUMMARY:The Office of Communications supports the Church's mission to evangelize by serving the Office of the Bishop and entities of the Catholic Diocese of Arlington (CDA) through compelling, appropriate and beautiful use of new and traditional media, content creation, effective media relations, and internal and external communications.The Director of Media Relations serves as a top aid/advisor for the Chief Communications Officer (CCO) of the Diocese of Arlington and is the designated point of contact for members of the news media. Additionally, the Director manages several pre-production responsibilities for videos and podcasts produced in the diocesan studio.The Director is an integral part of the diocese's efforts to build strong and effective relationships with media, resulting in accurate, compelling and frequent coverage of a vibrant and faith-filled diocesan Church.PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

  • Develop and implement strategies for working with the news media to cover the many positive stories, programs and services of the diocese, working closely with the Arlington Catholic Herald and Catholic Charities (of the Diocese of Arlington).
    • Advise and counsel the CCO in his role as diocesan spokesperson, or work with the appropriate diocesan representative(s) in preparation for interviews with the news media.
      • Strengthen and develop relationships with media outlets within the northern tier of Virginia, Catholic media, and appropriate national media.
        • Engage in proactive media outreach to promote the Diocese of Arlington in matters of local and national interest. Find opportunities for interviews, op-eds, guest spots, and free media placement for the diocese as a means of evangelization and sharing the scope of how the Diocese serves northern Virginia.
          • Write and disseminate press releases, media advisories and statements; draft talking points for senior officials in the Diocese, draft briefing materials for the CCO and senior leadership; draft/edit website content, media backgrounders, print promotional materials; write scripts for presentations, etc. Provide support to parishes and schools for crisis communications and when promoting major initiatives.
            • Handle and provide counsel on crisis communications; draft sensitive communications for diocesan leadership and entities.
              • Develop and implement strategic messages to be used on platforms throughout the Office of Communications.
                • Maximize publicity for diocesan priorities, stories, special events, programs and major announcements from diocesan offices, agencies and parishes.
                  • Provide counsel on potential and actual communications opportunities and threats; advise and plan strategies to address crises which may affect the diocese, including parishes and schools.
                    • Host regular workshops and training opportunities for diocesan staff, priests, and parish staff which articulate diocesan media policy and provides basic tools for media/public relations, interviewing, and crisis communications.
                      • Provide communications expertise to diocesan agencies and entities including the Virginia Catholic Conference and, in collaboration with the Deputy Director of Communications, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington. Work in conjunction with the Executive Director of the Virginia Catholic Conference (VCC) to facilitate VCC interaction with northern Virginia media; coordinate joint statements and op-eds of the two Virginia bishops.
                        • Build relationships and maintain contact with diocesan directors of media relations in neighboring dioceses and throughout the country to ensure best practices for the Diocese of Arlington.
                          • Coordinate media on-site at major events, including high profile funerals and masses
                            • Coordinate interview schedule, briefings, pre-interviews, and production needs of podcast.QUALIFICATIONS:
                              • Knowledge/Skills: Good understanding and knowledge of the Catholic Church and how communications can be used to spread the Gospel; excellent writing, editing, and oral communications skills; strong understanding of the secular media, particularly the northern Virginia area and national press; experience and comfort with crisis communications and nuances of sensitive communications, strong interpersonal skills; proficient in Microsoft Office; self-motivated, with strong organizational and management skills and sense of discretion; a practicing Catholic who is faithful to the Magisterium; and fluency in Spanish desirable.
                                • Licenses/Certifications: Valid driver's license must be maintained at all times.
                                  • Education: BS/BA required in communications, public relations, journalism or related field or equivalent degree and experience; MA in theology, journalism or communications-related field desirable.
                                    • Years and Types of Experience: Five to ten years' communications experience, including experience working with the media and with crisis and sensitive communications.
