The ideal Inpatient HIM Auditor/Coder will have extensive knowledge in the coding assignment of ICD -10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes for each inpatient visit type, diagnosis and medical procedure performed; requiring knowledge of disease process to assure the proper code is assigned. Assigns and/or audits codes related to the procedure or treatment performed utilizing classification systems software based on one of several hundred "diagnosis-related groups," or DRG. Code selection is based on established coding principles and guidelines in a manner which supports general billing and provides for appropriate extraction of data used by committees and individual members of the medical staff, other hospital departments and researchers.This candidate will code, evaluate the work of other coding staff, develop and conduct staff trainings as necessary. The Inpatient HIM Auditor/Coder will need to be able to evaluate records and prepare reports on documentation or coding issues, for review by management. They will make recommendations for changes in policies and procedures, guidelines and training programs related to coding and will need to attend virtual monthly meetings with coders and CDI, as required. Strong interpersonal skills and excellent judgment are required.



Qualifications



* Required:

* Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) and Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required.

* Five years of coding, compliance regulations, and audit procedures experience required.





* Preferred:

* Five years of experience with PCS, ICD-10 CM, DRG, encoders and groupers, and internet-based coding preferred.

* High School diploma or equivalent preferred.







Responsibilities



* Performs specialty tasks assigned to HIM involving screening and reporting of data to medical staff committees and legally mandated registries. Specialty tasks assigned carried out accurately, on time, in an independent manner.

* Assists with developing and maintaining inpatient coding guidelines and procedures for the Coding section.

* Monitors coding staff for guideline compliance and performs educational and training activities for the coding section as needed.

* Works closely with the business office to resolve billing and charging issues including but not limited to medical necessity requests and CDM review and development.

* Maintains audit and query logs for reporting to the AVP Clinical Revenue Integrity.

* Participates in compliance and revenue cycle committees as needed.

* Oversees and coordinates inpatient coding audits. Works closely with the Clinical Documentation Specialist on inpatient documentation issues. Provides written summaries of each audit.

* Selects and codes diagnoses and procedures from inpatient records. Coding appropriately and accurately done on schedule according to departmental policies/procedures and special requirements and guidelines for DRG and APC records.
