Job Description:
The American Public Power Association is looking for a Staff
Accountant to support the Accounting Manager with maintaining the
general ledger accounts and business transactions of the
organization while applying Generally Accepted Accounting
Principles (GAAP). This position is also responsible for all
accounts receivable related functions as well as serving as the
System Administrator of the time and attendance system for the
Association. Please note: This is not a remote position. Candidates
must be in DC, Maryland, or Virginia area. APPA offers a flexible
work schedule for full-time employees and the option for telework
is available after (3) months of employment (with supervisor
approval). Direct hire no agency
- Create receivable invoices (i.e., prepayments, staff
receivables, standard receivables)
- Oversee daily posting and mailing of invoices for all non-dues
orders
- Review and record all cash receipts daily in accordance with
established policy
- Monthly preparation and mailing of delinquent notices for
outstanding invoices
- Monitor accounts receivable aging including appropriate
follow-up with members to ensure timely collection
- Process quarterly bad debt write-off
- Perform monthly expense accruals and salary/benefit
allocations
- Perform monthly reconciliation of general ledger accounts
- Record monthly fixed asset depreciation and amortization of
prepaid expenses
- Record adjusting and reclassification journal entries
- Create deferred revenue schedules
- Perform interim and annual fixed asset inventory
- Assist with preparation of the annual budget
- Perform year-end audit reconciliations
- Assist with the preparation of financial statements in
accordance with GAAP
- Prepare and files quarterly Canadian GST/HST Tax and Sales &
Use Tax returns
- Record management of on-site and off-site accounting department
files in accordance with APPA retention policy and accounting best
practices
- Review Fonteva product set-up and coordinates related
training
- Review and approve bi-weekly timesheets for all staff
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required
- 3 to 5 years of relevant job experience
- Requires knowledge of GAAP
- Proficiency with Microsoft GP, Word and Excel
- Knowledge of Fonteva software preferred
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
- Requires accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Strong organizational and analytical skills
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Requires the ability to work independently on assigned duties
and must be able to work with minimum supervision on special
projects
